Every sound in Chinese — free and unlimited

Haoting listens to your Mandarin and tells you which part of the syllable went wrong — the initial, the final, or the tone.

In development. The pinyin table and the tone guide already work, right here in the browser.

What you practise

Every sound in the language, and every place learners lose one. The first three are free and unlimited; depth is where paid starts.

We do not count attempts

Four tones, 21 initials, every final — free and unlimited, forever. There is no daily quota to burn through in one sitting. Paid starts where depth starts: tone pairs, sandhi, contrast pairs, HSK volume, connected speech.

When we are not sure, we say so

Noise, clipping, a microphone that did not pick you up — that is not a bad score, and we do not hand one out. You get “we did not catch that”, because a failing grade you earned with your microphone teaches you nothing and makes you distrust the app.

The whole syllable inventory, on one page

Every initial against every final, with the gaps left visible — the combinations Mandarin does not use are information too, and most charts hide them.

The tones, drawn honestly

Five contours, none of them colour-coded. The second and third tones do not differ by height; they differ by where the turn happens — and almost every textbook diagram gets this wrong.
